Why do water pipes burst when the ambient temperature drops below 0°C?
Water pipes in colder countries often burst in winter. When the ambient temperature drops below 0°C, water in the water pipes freezes. As a result, the volume increases. This volume increase causes the pipe to overstress and burst.
