Why is concentrated HCl not used in laboratory HNO3 preparation?

Reasons for not using dark HCI in laboratory nitric acid preparation: Concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) is more volatile than nitric acid. When potassium nitrate and concentrated HCl are mixed and heated, the volatile HCl distils off before HNO3 is formed and accumulates in the receiving vessel. Therefore concentrated HCl is not used in nitric acid preparation.
