Answer: Throwing water on the fire extinguishes the fire. Water takes the necessary latent heat from the burning material and turns it into steam. As a result, the temperature of the burning material decreases. Again, the steam produced creates a blanket around the burning material, preventing oxygen-rich air from coming in contact with the burning material. So the fire goes out.
