Answer: Although graphite is a conductor of heat and electricity, it is a nonmetal because –

Physical Properties:

(i) Graphite is ductile and non-expansive.
(ii) Striking graphite does not produce a metallic sound.

Chemical Properties:

(i) Graphite does not react with mild acids to produce salts and hydrogen.
(ii) Oxide of graphite is acidic, not alkaline.
